A pedestrian injured earlier this month when a man intentionally drove a Hummer into McLean’s Silver Diner before setting himself on fire has died, police said.

Andrew Sheren, 74, of McLean, was struck by the Hummer on May 4 while walking into the diner in the 8100 block of Fletcher Street, according to a statement issued by Fairfax County Police. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said Sheren died on Wednesday from complications resulting from injuries he sustained in the crash, according to the statement.

Police said they have obtained arrest warrants for Samuel Ovie Abutoh, 59, of Springfield, for malicious wounding and felony destruction of property, and additional charges are possible. Abutoh, who drove the Hummer into the diner repeatedly before dousing himself in gasoline and lighting himself on fire, remains under the care of a local hospital, and warrants will be served upon his release, police said.

Speaking the day of the crash, Dan Arena, who was at the diner for lunch, said the man driving the Hummer rammed it into the diner as many as four times.

“Every time he went forward and hit the diner, he was emotionless,” Arena said of the driver. “There was no reaction at all ... just forward and backward.”
